Couples therapy

Approach & orientations

Couples therapy can address a range of topics including conflict, cultural differences, challenging patterns, and premarital conversations. I will occasionally assign “homework” for you and your partner to engage in, to put new skills into practice so that they become intuitive gestures of love and support.

I utilize the following therapeutic orientations in couples therapy, with a lens of intersectionality and cultural differences:

  • The Gottman Method is developed by Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Julie Gottman. It focuses on enhancing couples' communication, understanding, and intimacy by teaching practical skills for managing conflict, building trust, and strengthening the emotional bond between partners. The method involves assessment tools, interventions, and strategies derived from extensive research to help couples develop healthier, more fulfilling relationships.

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples centers on understanding and reshaping emotional interactions between partners. EFT aims to create secure emotional bonds by helping couples recognize and express their underlying emotions and attachment needs. Through guided conversations, couples learn to identify negative patterns of interaction and develop healthier ways of connecting, fostering greater intimacy and relationship satisfaction.

  • Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) in couples therapy integrates principles of self-compassion and empathy to enhance relationship dynamics. It helps couples recognize and address self-criticism and relational distress by promoting understanding, acceptance, and emotional support. Through cultivating compassion for oneself and one's partner, couples can develop a more caring and resilient bond while navigating challenges and conflicts in a constructive way.

Fees & insurance

I am in-network with United and Oxford plans, however insurance does not cover couples therapy unless the focus of sessions indicates a billable mental health diagnosis of the insurance-holder. For example, treatment for anxiety, in which couples therapy is recommended as part of the individual treatment plan.

Most of the time, couples therapy focuses on problems in the relationship, therefore there is not a medical or mental health diagnosis that can be utilized for insurance coverage.

Session fees are $265 for 60-minute sessions. Sliding scale is offered for those who are in financial hardship.
